The 2018 FMEA Pre-Conference promises to inspire and offer practical new ideas for all music educators. The focus is on artistic innovations in teaching. Some of the very best music educators from across our state will be presenting their ideas for everyone, in all areas of music to consider. The Pre-conference sessions will focus on innovative demonstrations of artistic teaching in K-12 settings. Attendees will experience new teaching concepts, ideology, and musical creativity to help generate new approaches to their classrooms.

The Pre-Conference will be on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 beginning at 1:00 p.m. and ending at 5:00. Register for the Pre-Conference as part of your Conference Registration

Artistry in Teaching

Dr. Clifford Madsen

This engaging interactive session will present new research-based concepts and teaching techniques specifically focusing on K - 12 music educators.

Dr. Clifford Madsen, the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Music, is Coordinator of Music Education/Music Therapy/Contemporary Media and teaches in the areas of music education, music therapy, research, and psychology of music. Throughout his long career, Dr. Madsen has had extensive K-12 music teaching experience and is the author of many books including Teaching/Discipline: A Positive Approach for Educational Development, Experimental Research in Music, Competency Based Music Education, Applications of Research in Music Behavior, and Vision 2020: The Housewright Symposium on the Future of Music Education.


Artistry in Non-Traditional Music Settings

Dr. David Williams with Mickey Polley, Carlos Silva, and Nick Stefanic

This session will feature techniques and experiences for teaching a variety of non-traditional music ensembles for all levels of instruction.

Dr. David A. Williams is an Associate Professor of Music Education and the Associate Director of the School of Music at the University of South Florida. His research interests involve the use of student-centered and informal learning pedagogies and how these impact teaching and learning in music education.


Prism Performances that Pop!

Ernesta Chicklowski and colleagues

A collaborative demonstration of creative global ways to help your students shine and find success. Aspects include planning, logistics, and presentation ideas involving both instructors and students in innovative ways to make music an educational and entertaining experience. This session will involve a performance from over 300 students from the Hillsborough County schools.  

Ernesta Chicklowski serves as the music teacher at Roosevelt Elementary in Tampa, Florida. She earned her degree in music education from Florida State University. Mrs. Chicklowski was named Teacher of the Year in 2002 and 2012, and honored as Hillsborough County's 2014 Elementary Music Educator of the Year. Mrs. Chick serves as the President-elect of the Florida Elementary Music Educators Association. Her expertise has afforded her the opportunity to present in symposiums and workshops on the state and national levels. She holds certifications in Orff-Schulwerk I, Little Kids Rock I & II, and World Drumming I.


Should We Work Harder or Teach Differently? 

Dr. Judy Bowers

Musical Pedagogy requires teacher decision-making, based on student ability, training, commitment, motivation, and a host of other variables. Student failure can quickly occur when teacher assumptions about prior knowledge and experience ultimately sabotage ensemble success by presuming readiness that does not exist. This session focuses on developmental teaching methods to support high engagement with high achievers while allowing beginning students to have the understand.

Judy Bowers, is the Biendenharn Chair of Music Education at the Louisiana - Monroe. She is formally the Professor of Choral Music Education at Florida State University, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music and music education, and conducted the Women’s Glee Club. Partnerships she developed to broaden and enrich learning opportunities for choral music education and women’s glee club students included: Adopt-A-Choir, a high school/university connection for one concert; Raa Singers, a before-school choir pairing university students with urban middle school students, and, MTC Glee, connecting women within a correctional facility with FSU students to rehearse weekly and present one concert per semester.
